» Amanda Kendle - EU Expansion

Emily, thanks for the detailed info on this situation. Right now I'm living in Germany and many people really believe the EU is going "too far" (it doesn't help that a lot of companies are moving their plants and factories from Germany into the cheaper EU countries). Personally, I believe it's a great idea, but incredibly difficult to implement. What's your guess about the future of the EU????
cheers
Amanda

Thanks Amanda -- I think any move is going to be tough, we saw that with the rejection of the constitution. That was a real blow for the momentum. In the end, I think expansion will continue. It might take a bit of a break over the next five years, but the benefits that poorer countries stand to gain will be hard to deny over the longer term. And if those countries undertake the reforms that the EU wants them to, they should be able to join.
